Monster Project By Zaq Dayton
What is the The Monster Project? The Monster Project is the undertaking of a passionate collection of artists who share a common goal: to help children recognize the power of their own imaginations and to encourage them to pursue their creative potential. Essentially, children from elementary schools are invited to draw a monster, give it a name and personality traits, and then hand it over to The Monster Project. Then, the drawings are handed over to professional designers and artists to create a more detailed rendition of the child's monster. This is the monster I created for my assigned child.
First and foremost, I sketched out my monster with pencil on paper. I drew the main outlines, and then decided to ink the monster using a drawing tablet in Photoshop. Most of my time inking was spent on the detail in hair, as I believed this was a very important area for my monster to really shine. Since my assigned child did not include a lot of detail in the monster's body, I wanted to focus strictly on the monster's head, face, and hair.
After spending the majority of my time inking my monster and adding details not included in the originally sketch, I added color to my monster. I didn't want to completely change the colors of my monster. What I wanted to do was keep the colors that the child included in his original drawing. With that said, I had to work with shades of magenta, turquoise, as well as brown. I believe these colors actually aided with the creepiness of the monster.
